The Five Freedoms of Free Range
It is expected that by 2012 all hens in the Union will be free range. Worldwide, consumers are increasingly aware of the impact of their buying choices on animal welfare, health and safety and environmental sustainability. Windmeul Eggs is pleased to support the increasing number of South African consumers who choose Free Range. Our Free Range Eggs are produced by hens which enjoy the 5 Freedoms as laid out by the international guidelines of Compassion in World Farming:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury and disease
- Freedom to express normal behaviour
- Freedom of fear and distress
In 1991, Mrs Louise van der Merwe of Animal Voice and Compassion in World Farming introduced the concept of Free Range hens in South Africa. Windmeul Eggs became a keen advocate of Free Range, and Mrs van der Merwe has often visited our facilities, which meet all the requirements of independent Free Range audits.
